Srikandi Mustokoweni

Wayang stories rarely center women, and when they do, the female characters often serve to support male heroes. Mustokoweni is strong, strategic, and shaped by family trauma, yet her journey ends with her falling for the man who defeats her. Srikandi, though famous as a skilled warrior, is still written to rely on her male nephew to solve her conflict. In our retelling, warriors Mustokoweni and Srikandi keep their strength, make their own choices, and resolve their own battles—breaking away from the old ending where women “find peace” only through love or domestic life.
